Editorial Reviews

Product Description
An incredibly reassuring approach by two physicians who specialize in helping children overcome their difficulties in learning and succeeding in school

For parents, teachers, and other professionals seeking practical guidance about ways to help children with learning problems, this book provides a comprehensive look at learning differences ranging from dyslexia to dysgraphia, to attention problems, to giftedness. In The Mislabeled Child, the authors describe how a proper understanding of a child’s unique brain-based strengths can be used to overcome many different obstacles to learning. They show how children are often mislabeled with diagnoses that are too broad (ADHD, for instance) or are simply inaccurate. They also explain why medications are often not the best ways to help children who are struggling to learn. The authors guide readers through the morass of commonly used labels and treatments, offering specific suggestions that can be used to help children at school and at home. This book offers extremely empowering information for parents and professionals alike.

The Mislabeled Child examines a full spectrum of learning disorders, from dyslexia to giftedness, clarifying the diagnoses and providing resources to help. The Eides explain how a learning disability encompasses more than a behavioral problem; it is also a brain dysfunction that should be treated differently.

After having a frustrating couple of years at school with one of my children we (almost by accident) had vision test performed and this opened the door to another world that at first was daunting.

This book and the data contatined have been invaluable, the understanding myself and spouse have now about the issues/problem of our child and how to help are well worth the purchase price of this books.

The issue of labeling children and, really, anyone with mental illness, is a serious one that anyone who is confronted with mental health issues for themselves or their child needs to consider. Labeling a child can affect their self-image. For some children, they repeat over and over in their mind, with their heads down, "I have ADHD," or even worse, "I am ADHD," "my ADHD," "I am bipolar," an even more common expression. With the label of bipolar, all engines stop, and everything goes in reverse. In other words, the label bipolar, is rather damning. There is no need to fight, no need to make any changes, simply give in to the label, resign, and take your sedating drugs for the rest of your life. That's basically the ultimate level of labeling. With ADHD there is always some chance that a child might outgrow it.

That is why books like this, as well as the excellent book from Scott Shannon on this subject, Please Don't Label My Child: Break the Doctor-Diagnosis-Drug Cycle and Discover Safe, Effective Choices for Your Child's Emotional Healthand the work of Sharna Olfman No Child Left Different (Childhood in America)Bipolar Children: Cutting-Edge Controversy, Insights, and Research (Childhood in America)are necessary. It keeps the psychiatric witch doctors in check and gives parents a second opinion.

Overcoming ADHD Without Medication: A Parent and Educator's Guidebook

There is a lot parents can do for children to help them overcome ADHD, depression, and even bipolar disorder. The books on this page can help parents to do so. I prefer Scott Shannon's book, to the Eide's. The Eide's book also has much value, the Shannon book is a bit more refined and has a lot of practical value. I don't go for the homeopathic route for mental illness, but besides that, Scott Shannon pretty much hits the nail on the head, and has all the bases covered if one is considering ADHD and bipolar disorder. For a more inclusive discussion of the subject, the Eide's book is good.

Very Important Book for any parent

This is such a fantastic book for parents, teachers, and medical personel. I can't give it enough praise. My son has some language delay, but is young yet. No one thus far has been able to really help me clear my confusion about what is going on with him. What I love about this book is that it has helped me to figure out how Nick learns, and what I can do to help him learn and work his short term and long term memory. Nick has auditory problems that I am trying to clear. I love that this book can generalize the different learning disorders and put specific interventions for the parent to help their child.

The only problem with this book..is that it is very detailed in how the memory works, descirbes in detail how childern learn, and it can be difficult/overwhelming to get through this book. I do believe it is very important to read it throughly to get the most out of it, but I want to get through it quickly. I have found I can only read alittle bit at a time. So far this has been my favorite book with specific things you can do to work your child's learning center...the brain. Loved it!!!

This easy to follow book, and quick reference tool should be REQUIRED reading for all teachers, school administrators and school psyche/counseling personnel.

This publication explains common sensory issues and how those can manifest in behaviors outside of and within the school setting.

For parents of any child - make it one of your MUST-READ titles. You will understand your child with a whole new dimension, and most importantly - know how to help them maximize their own potential.

This is a good book particularly for anyone struggling with issues at school or home. The early part of the book isn't that useful, but once you "get" what you're looking for there's a ton of REALLY useful research-based information. I'd highly recommend.
