A SWEET ROMANTIC COMEDY AND A SLY FARCE,
Rating (5)
Date: 2008-02-04

With a title like "Transsiberiennes" one thinks of the Cold War, Realpolitik, and prisoners sent off to Siberia.
Actually, this book is a sweet romantic comedy about a Frenchman who has a fight with his girl/wife and, on a whim, decides to take a holiday on the famous trans-Siberian train to show her how little the break-up means to him.
On the train he meets a cute girl and decides to have a fling with her, using all the casuistic sophistry the French are famous for to justify his infidelity. Unfortunately, his little romantic maneuvers on the train lead him afoul of Pre-glassnost Russian security.
Soon, he is stranded in a Russian prison wearing nothing but the pyjamas he planned to wear while seducing the girl on the train. Suddenly, his relationship with his girl/wife doesn't seem so boring.
There is nothing funnier than watching him get into this mess. The getting out of the mess becomes an international incident as well as a sly farce as the naive Frenchman who was planning a bit of `sex tourism' slowly realizes the seriousness of his situation. But all ends well and he is rescued by whom he least expects.
The MORAL of the story is don't just read the travel section of the paper, look at the headlines--it might save your neck.
