Product Description
Music educators often charge into their early classroom experiences with an excitement and passion not always seen in other disciplines. And while they may have a plan (or two or three) for the rehearsal itself, many find themselves caught off guard by the periphery demands of their position. Written with a warm brand of humor, wit and real-world savvy by Dr. Richard Weymuth, Professor Emeritus, Northwest Missouri State University and seasoned veteran of the music classroom, this creative approach to the many non-musical responsibilities of a music educator -- fundraising, selling yourself and your program, working with the administration, to name but three -- will raise your awareness of these areas while offering practical advice to navigate any unexpected challenges. While targeted to recent graduates or those new to the profession, this "quick read" will also rejuvenate and revitalize veteran teachers.

Great Gift for a Music Teacher

This was purchased as a gift for a new k-5 music teacher. The gift was appreciated and I have since been told that the book is easy to read and filled with some good advice. It is nice to know that the book was exactly as described.

Let me start by saying that I haven't read this book. I don't need to.

How can I give it 5 stars without ever touching the book? Easy. I heard it all straight from the man himself.

15 years ago I sat in a classroom in the basement of the music department at Northwest Missouri State University. I forget the exact name of the class, but it was the music ed methods class you take right before you go out to student teach. The version geared for voice majors was taught by Dr. Weymuth. One day he dragged in a huge box. It was full of hats. He would reach into the box and pull out a hat and put it on. Then he would explain why and how each of us would at some time need to wear the proverbial version of that during our teaching career.

I plan on buying the book as my lecture notes have long since been buried. Even though I'm not new at the game, I'm sure there will be some useful refreshers. If the book doesn't live up to my memory of one of the more interesting lectures I've ever had, I'll write a follow-up to eat my words.
